Background
The name Cannubi refers to the quality of the grapes and wines on the hills of the same name, one of which is part of the cru (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive) of the Commune of Barolo.

The vineyards, which are part of the estate of L''Astemia Pentita, are situated on the first slopes tucked between two roads that rise out of the town. This is the lower part of the Cannubi, south- and southeast-facing, resulting in wines with strong body, elegance, and pleasingly tense tannins.

Tasting Notes
The nose opens with pleasing fresh notes of red fruits, followed by hints of ripe fruit and dried flowers. A dry, elegant, and silky Barolo, which gradually builds on the palate, unfolding complex olfactory sensations that are spicy and woody and blend perfectly. It has a firm structure and silky tannic texture. A wine that melds drinkability and longevity. Serve at 16-18 degrees C.

Tasting Notes: Based on one’s perspective, this is either one of the Barolo district’s more distinctive or quirky or eccentric wineries. The winery is likewise either very cool or very odd to look at, and the website seems to offer tours of various sorts rather than even describing the wines made and offered (or, actually, not offered). Even the bottle used is one I’ve never seen from any other producer. But with all that noted, the proprietors own or buy fruit from the famed Cannubi MGA (or Cru), and when they get things right with that fruit, the results can be stunning. The 2015 was terrific - from a vintage that’s not among the very best, and though this 2019 is not the immediate fleshpot that the 2015 was, it is a more complete wine with a much longer life ahead of it. The aroma, flavor, and structural components are nearly perfect in proportion, starting with a nice mix of fruity and savory scents and leading into complex fruit flavors supported by very precisely tuned acidity and tannin, with just a bit of wood adding spice up front and grip in the finish. Tasting Notes: Red/ruby-colored, the 2019 Barolo Cannubi reveals slightly rustic notes of medicinal herbs, stewed cherries, purple flowers, and cedar. On the palate, it has grippy and building tannins and a broad-shouldered feel leaning toward full-bodied. It’s drying on the finish and is going to show at its best over the next 4-5 years.

Tasting Notes: A generic and fruity expression of Cannubi, showing notes of hazelnuts and baking spices to the cooked red cherries, bramble fruit and stones. Chewy and tight on the palate, with a medium to full body and an austere, medium-length finish. Rather simple and lean at the end. Better from 2026.
