Terroir
Located at 300 meters above sea level, the vineyard features soils rich in clay and marl. With excellent ventilation and abundant sun exposure, this terroir ensures optimal ripeness and consistently high-quality harvests each year.

Vintage
Although the winter was particularly harsh, the vineyards did not suffer any frost damage, and the spring began with cool temperatures and abundant precipitation. As summer drew closer, temperatures rose above average. The summer of 2017 was very hot and dry. Whilst the plants did suffer slightly, our high altitude ensured constant ventilation and the all-important fresh night temperatures. Rain finally arrived in September, allowing the grapes to ripen under near-optimal conditions.

Fermentation
Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in 35-hl tronic barrels, allowing the natural microbiome to shape the wine's character.

Maceration
Three days of cold maceration before fermentation, followed by 30 days of skin contact post-fermentation.

Wood Aging
Three years in large Slavonian oak barrels and cellar-aged French barrique.

Tasting Notes: Brunello that shows the ripeness of the vintage. At the same time the rich plum and cherry character is buttressed with bright acidity and dusty tannins. It’s chewy yet polished. Fresh at the end. [...] From organically grown grapes.

Tasting Notes: The nose is rather shy but eventually offers truffle, leather, ripe black-skinned fruit and crushed mint. Full-bodied and concentrated, the chewy palate doles out fleshy black cherry, raspberry jam and licorice alongside velvety, close-grained tannins. Drink through 2027.

Tasting Notes: San Polino produces two Brunello and this bottling hails from rented vineyards below the Fuligni estate in the northeast of Montalcino. It’s a lush, humid area with clay soil producing big juicy berries, even in 2017. Ample in proportions with plump, rich fruit, this is buoyed up by tangy acidity. Blackberry and currants are nuanced by earthy root and fragrant balsamic notes. This is lively in its execution and its clayey tannins stick to the mineral-edged finish. Another year in bottle would do this justice.

Tasting Notes: The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino boasts an intense bouquet of tart raspberries, savory herbs and spice. It’s supple and fruit-forward on the palate, with ripe cherry and strawberry further motivated by juicy acidity, and leaves a subtle coating of sweet tannin and hints of licorice through the finale. Don’t overthink this fun, vibrant yet balanced expression from the 2017 vintage. While San Polino is located on the southern hill, the Brunello is sourced from a northern location at 300 meters in loamy clay soils.

Tasting Notes: The biodynamic and certified-organic San Polino 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows some hot-vintage ripeness with baked cherry and plum. The fruit is heavy, rich and interwoven with thick tones of sweet spice, tar and campfire ash. This vintage shows rich concentration, powerful 14.5% alcohol and stemmy tannins. [...]

Tasting Notes: Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. A concentrated, earthy cherry nose that is almost a little rich with savoury, minerally, meaty notes. Lush cherry fruit with a full aromatic spread on the palate with tons of chewy tannins. Long and with lots of stuffing. (WS)
