Winemaker
Rob Lloyd earned his master's degree in enology from the University of California, Davis. He interned at Kent Rasmussen Winery, gaining first-hand knowledge about winemaking while at Davis. After graduating, Rob became the enologist and then assistant winemaker at La Crema in Sonoma. Returning to the Napa Valley, he joined Rombauer Vineyards in 2001 as assistant winemaker and then as winemaker. While at Rombauer, the winery received many new accolades and awards, including being named by Wine Spectator as one of the Top 100 wines in the world in 2007. With the desire to assist vineyard owners in creating the finest wines from their grapes, Rob left Rombauer in 2008. He established Lloyd Wine Consulting and now works with his clients to craft world-class wines. Rob is passionate about maximizing each vineyard's potential and translating it into outstanding, unique wines.

Tasting Notes: Brown brick red color. Aromas and flavors of black cherry, chocolate with a touch of shaved coconut, mint, and black raspberry with a round, lively, dry medium-to-full body and a warming, nuanced, long finish that exhibits nuances of blackberry, black cherry, chocolate, and mint with coating, firm, drying tannins and moderate oak flavor. A beautiful wine today with the rich oak character leaning towards dessert and the capacity to age for decades as it slowly shows more of its savory side.

Tasting Notes: A wine that spent 30 months in [...] new French oak, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard 511 offers a unique style in its plum and red currant fruit as well as lots of scorched earth, graphite, and cedar wood, and tobacco. A great example of the Diamond Mountain terroir with its ripe, sexy, mineral-laced style, this full-bodied, concentrated 2014 has building tannin, a voluptuous texture, and a great finish. Count me in as a fan.

Tasting Notes: Medium ruby in colour. One of the more youthful and intriguing wines from an aromatic standpoint, tasted in a lineup of 40+ wines at the Napa Valley Vintners on 9 September 2024, exploring the 2014 Napa Cab vintage 10 years on. It offers primary blue fruit aromatics, fragrant sagebrush, tobacco leaf, and volcanic minerals. Full-bodied, with mineral-scented, firm tannins that are long and hold the centre, as notes of blackcurrants and black liquorice mingle with underbrush and dried sage. It is complex and lengthy, with plenty of room to evolve in the cellar.

Tasting Notes: Deep garnet in color with a touch of brick, Vineyard 511's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon offers leather and spice box notes on the nose, opening out to a core of baked plums and creme de cassis with a hints of dried roses and star anise. Full-bodied, the palate is soft and nicely poised with floral-laced black fruit layers and a fragrant finish.

Tasting Notes: Full of blackberry and cocoa flavors, this full-bodied and fully tannic wine is aging well. Nicely concentrated, ripe and opulent on the palate with a good, firm structure to keep it maturing on pace. Drink or hold.

Tasting Notes: This wine offers tones of anise, black currant and sage that play along a thread of forceful tannin and French oak. The palate offers a density of jammy cherry and dark chocolate that persists through a spicy finish.
