2021 Decouverte Vineyard Pinot Noir

This Pinot Noir features fruit from our second estate, Decouverte Vineyard. The grapes are handpicked in the heart of the Dundee Hills wine region and defined by the red-fruit character and freshness typical of their volcanic Jory soils.

Vintage
In 2021, a late cool spring was contrasted by record heat in June. Fortunately, a warm and dry summer evened out the dynamic start to the growing season, with high-quality fruit in small clusters. We harvested Pinot Noir from September 9th to September 23rd. In all our vineyards, the fruit was ripe and very clean. The wines display beautiful color, complex aromas, and distinct freshness. With such quality, we were able to push the maceration time, revealing concentration and well-balanced wines.

Production
Inspired by the beauty of simplicity, the facility harnesses gravity-flow winemaking, allowing the juice to run naturally from the grapes, from the crush pad to fermentation vessel to barrel. During elevage, we use small fermentation tanks to verify the best of the terroir of our vineyards, block by block. Each lot is aged in custom, handcrafted French oak barrels, chosen for the right tightness of grain as well as the soil in which the oak grew. We allow our wines to rest quietly-racking maybe only once - until they reach their purest expression and are then released.

Tasting Notes
Benefiting from the cool and even harvest time of the 2021 vintage, the Decouverte Pinot Noir has an elegant fragrance of wild strawberry, rose, and liquorice root. The palate is delicate and supple, with expressive fruity and floral aromas, balanced by vivid tension and energy.

Tasting Notes: A bit lighter on its feet than the Pinot Noir siblings, the 2021 Decouverte sports a light neon ruby core with a bluish rim in the glass. Elegant on the nose and on the palate, it glides over the tongue with no rough edges to speak [of]. Red fruit driven with shades of pine forest, crushed stone, and powdered graphite thrown in to keep things interesting. I love the floral note that I get on the finish. Highly recommended.

Candied red fruits transition to elegance and savoury [...] French oak. This wine distinguishes itself on spice and lifted fruit character. Elegance and freshness drive a generosity of fruit, with wild red berries, bright pomegranate and candied strawberry flavours.

Tasting Notes: The 2021 Pinot Noir Decouverte Vineyard is simply stunning, enticing with dark florals and mentholated herbal tones elevating its crushed blackberry fruit. This opens with a pleasant inner sweetness and textures of pure silk, giving way to depths of vividly ripe black cherries that swirl under an air of violet pastille. The 2021 lingers impossibly long while maintaining a lovely inner freshness. Hints of licorice and lavender fade over a sour citrus tinge and gently grippy tannins.

Tasting Notes: The 2021 Pinot Noir Decouverte Vineyard has expressive aromas of red cherry, cranberry, lavender, bitters and fennel. The light-bodied palate is bright and delicately styled with lacy tannins, nuanced flavors and a long, spicy finish. It opens dramatically with air and will benefit from an hour in a decanter.
