Heritiers Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Source
The Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru appellation is shared by the two villages of Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses in the northern part of the Cote de Beaune. The village of Aloxe-Corton has the rare ability of having over half of its area covered by Grand Cru vineyards. The exposure ranges from east to south and southwest. This vineyard is one of the oldest owned by Louis Jadot since the 19th century. It is located in the very heart of the appellation (next to the Corton Pougets), which then expanded after 1966. Originally, it was the only place allowed to bear the Corton-Charlemagne appellation name. This vineyard is ideally south-oriented.
Vintage
Winter 2021-2022 alternated between mild periods and colder temperatures. It was more or less dry. Temperatures in April were slightly above the norm, but it wasn't until May that the weather became very hot. We had some rain, and this accelerated the growth cycle, with flowering taking place in the last half of the month. June remained hot, but there was considerable rainfall, particularly towards the end of the month, when we measured falls of between 80 and 150mm. This rainfall was key to the vegetative growth cycle in 2022. Veraison began during the first ten days of July in some of the earliest sectors, but we saw no rainfall in the vineyards that month. As a result, the pace of veraison slowed. During summer, the region was hit with no fewer than four heatwaves, but the vines coped well and didn't show the same signs of suffering that we saw in 2020. With temperatures reaching above 34 degrees C and a lack of water, the vines 'closed down' and all processes ground to a halt, particularly the ripening of the grapes. The nights were warm between the 15th and 20th of August, and blocked ripening even further. Finally, a few thundery showers traveled through the Cote. Harvest began on the 30th of August. Grapes were harvested by hand and put in small cases to avoid damaging the fruit.
Production
Grapes were pressed softly, then fermented in oak barrels produced by the CADUS cooperage. 1/3 new barrels. Aging lasted about 15 months on the fine lees before bottling.

Tasting Notes: This has the classic reserved aromas and handsomely structured palate of the Corton Charlemagne cru, and will only get better with time. Subtle citrus and white peach aromas lead to mineral, Bosc pear, lime and lemon flavors held tightly in acidity and a bit of tannin. Best from 2029.

Tasting Notes: Round and sumptuous, featuring aromas and flavors of mint, peach, butter and baking spices, this white is majestic and complex. A briny seashore element emerges as this develops to the long, detailed aftertaste, ending with an excellent finish. Shows harmony yet could use a bit more bottle aging. Best from 2027 through 2037.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru ([...] Heritiers Jadot), which is continuing its elevage in foudre, unwinds in the glass with notes of citrus oil, pear, hazelnuts, fresh mint and subtle reduction. Full-bodied, layered and chalky, with a rich core of fruit that's still youthfully tightly wound, it concludes with a long, resonant finish. It's one of the high points of the range this year.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru feels like a later-picked wine though it maintains freshness, with quite "punchy" peach and orange pith scents that don't hold back. The palate is ripe and forward, plush tropical fruit with a lacquer of creamy oak that, towards the finish, overrides the terroir expression and makes it feel a bit concocted. Perhaps give it another two or three years in bottle and hope that the oak will be assimilated? Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Tasting Notes: Cask sample. Sweet almond paste on the nose - very true to appellation! Substantial yet sweet rather than savoury. Well put together but there is a bit more nerve in white Burgundies at the southern end of the Cote d’Or. There is certainly some purity and grand-cru concentration here. Long. Jancis Robinson
