Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres Premier Cru
Source
Puligny-Montrachet, situated to the south of Meursault and to the north of Chassagne-Montrachet, shares with Chassagne a handful of the greatest white wine vineyards in the world. The Premier Cru vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet, noted for the exceptionally high and consistent quality of the wines they produce, stretch across the upper half of Puligny's slope from Meursault to Chassagne. Les Folatieres lies near the summit of this slope, above Clos de la Garenne, roughly midway between Meursault and Montrachet. The clay and chalk soil, which is very stony, drains well and warms through easily.
Vintage
Winter 2021-2022 alternated between mild periods and colder temperatures. It was more or less dry. Temperatures in April were slightly above the norm, but it wasn't until May that the weather became very hot. We had some rain, and this accelerated the growth cycle, with flowering taking place in the last half of the month. June remained hot, but there was considerable rainfall, particularly towards the end of the month, when we measured falls of between 80 and 150mm. This rainfall was key to the vegetative growth cycle in 2022. Veraison began during the first ten days of July in some of the earliest sectors, but we saw no rainfall in the vineyards that month. As a result, the pace of veraison slowed. During summer, the region was hit with no fewer than four heatwaves, but the vines coped well and didn't show the same signs of suffering that we saw in 2020. With temperatures reaching above 34 degrees C and a lack of water, the vines 'closed down' and all processes ground to a halt, particularly the ripening of the grapes. The nights were warm between the 15th and 20th of August, and blocked ripening even further. Finally, a few thundery showers traveled through the Cote. Harvest began on the 30th of August. Grapes were harvested by hand and put in small cases to avoid damaging the fruit.
Production
The grapes are gently pressed, then fermented in oak barrels produced by the CADUS cooperage. 1/3 new barrels. The wine aged 12-15 months on the fine lees before bottling.
Pairings
Mixed salads, vegetable tempura, seafood, sushi, ceviche, salmon tartare, vegetarian cuisine, chicken, escargot, goat cheese.

Tasting Notes: Richness and balance coexist in this remarkably pure, fluid and elegant wine. Beautiful aromas of lemon blossoms, toasted almonds, poached pears and vanilla bean lead to equally luscious fruit and spice flavors on a medium body that’s backed by vivid acidity. Drink or hold.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres 1er Cru has a fragrant nose with a mixture of white and yellow fruit, crushed stone and just a hint of melted candle wax. The palate is fresh and zesty on the entry. Fine, tensile acidity with impressive tension, this is armed with plenty of sapidity on the finish to tempt you back for more. Very fine. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
