2022 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
The Wine
The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon has been our foundational wine for well over three decades. It is a benchmark for the long-lived hillside wines of the Napa Valley, full of structure and aging potential, yet seductively forward in its varietal character. The dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill produce small, intensely flavorful grapes. Crop thinning allows for full, even ripening and further elevates flavor complexity.
Growing Season and Harvest
2022 began with generous winter rains that filled our reservoirs and saturated our soils. A cool, dry spring was followed by ideal summer weather with no days above 100 degrees F until a significant heat event near Labor Day. Thankfully, with extensive irrigation and careful canopy management to protect the fruit from the sun, we were able to respond to the heat on a block-by-block basis. Harvest began in early September and concluded on October 17, with our red Bordeaux grapes picked at a range of ripeness levels to ensure abundant options at the blending table.
Tasting Notes
Beautifully dark, complex, and concentrated, this wine offers luxurious aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry and plum, layered with hints of cedar, mountain sage, aged tobacco, thyme and toasted oak. The structure is seamless and silky, with a glowing richness that permeates the palate, adding depth and generosity to flavors of black cherry, currant, chocolate, and espresso bean. Notions of fresh herbs and barrel spice provide a lovely counterpoint throughout the long, resonating finish.

Tasting Notes: Highly perfumed and scented with some pepper spice, minty menthol aspects, damsons, cherries and blackcurrants. Floral accents too. Grippy in the best way, this captures your attention and doesn't let it go. Amazing minerality - the salty wet stones linger on the palate with a mineral, saline aspect alongside the blackcurrants and plums. Still quite compact and a touch strict in terms of tannins and spice - vanilla, chocolate and lots of oak but this will settle. Great quality. Owners the Chappellet family with director David Frankie and winemaker Philip Titus. 2% Merlot completes the blend.

Tasting Notes: This Cabernet is yet another Chappellet “Signature” that is worthy of the founder’s autograph. It combines all the ripeness that Pritchard Hill offers with carefully selected barrels that impart layered spice tones that invite on the nose and intrigue in the mouth. It is of course structured to go long, yet it’s fine to enjoy near term with a vigorous decanting. It is the sort of wine you will wish you could buy ten cases of and try a bottle once a month for ten years to enjoy its evolution every step of the way.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, and 2% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple in color, after a little swirling, notes of cassis, blackberry preserves, and prunes slowly emerge from the glass, giving way to underlying tar, bay leaves, and crushed rocks hints. Full-bodied, the palate is coated with baked black fruits flavors and herbal accents, framed by firm, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and savory.

Tasting Notes: A killer wine and great value, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature reveals tons of cassis and darker, almost blue fruits intermixed with sappy spring flowers, crushed stone, and lead pencil nuances. Based on 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, and 2% Merlot, it's balanced and medium to full-bodied, with beautiful tannins. This is a no-brainer purchase that will drink beautifully for 10-12 years.

Tasting Notes: Well-priced for the quality, Chappellet's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature serves up bold aromas of mocha, cassis and black cherries. In the mouth, it's full-bodied and packed with flavor, nicely concentrated and framed by supple tannins. It's not overripe - a real risk this vintage - but does have a pronounced mocha note on the lingering finish.

Tasting Notes: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, 2% Merlot. [...] Some of the darkest wines here! Blackish crimson. But actually it’s contained and like essence of Napa mountain. Really nice - polished but appetising. Very pure!
