The 2022 vintage serves as a bookend to California's historic drought, with limited water availability shaping the growing season. Early on, these conditions set the stage for lower yields and intensely concentrated fruit. Summer brought periods of elevated temperatures, culminating in an unprecedented Labor Day heatwave that rapidly accelerated ripening, quickly followed by much-needed rainfall, offering brief relief. Despite these extremes, Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot flourished under meticulous vineyard and canopy management. Guided by Winemaker Tony Biagi's expertise in precise harvest timing, our 2022 portfolio showcases remarkable concentration, firm structure, and ripe tannins, a testament to To Kalon Vineyard's enduring resilience and legacy.

Painstakingly crafted each vintage, Highest Beauty is our attempt to capture the finest expression of Cabernet Sauvignon and the purest representation of the legendary To Kalon Vineyard. Produced from 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit Verdot that is hand-selected from blocks throughout To Kalon Vineyard, the Highest Beauty exhibits classic Cabernet Sauvignon character with great richness and depth. Cherry, black raspberry, and bramble captivate the nose and are complemented by notes of chocolate shavings and cedar. Flavors of black licorice, tobacco, and cocoa nib are wrapped by subtle toasted spice.

Tasting Notes: This vintage offers a distinctive savory character, from the first whiff to the lingering finish. Aromas of green and black olives, walnut husk and blackcurrants lead to intense flavors of blackberries, dried blueberries, spearmint, dark chocolate, cocoa, graphite, cedar and espresso. Drinkable now and best from 2030.

Tasting Notes: [...] the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Highest Beauty sports a healthy ruby/plum hue as well as both red and blue fruits, sappy spring flowers, savory herbs, and tobacco. It's medium to full-bodied, has a nicely focused, balanced mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It's another 2022 that will evolve nicely over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2025-2040.

Full-bodied and plush, the palate unfolds with juicy cherry and plum fruit, intertwined with exotic brown spices, perfumed florals, and soaring tannins. Tasting Notes: Ripe and dense but well-defined, this comes across as remarkably polished as well, with warmed cassis and plum sauce elements rolling through gently despite their heft. Violet and iris accents skirt above the fruit, while a steady, warm loam note tugs decidedly from below. An admirable effort. Best from 2026 through 2036.
