Vintage Details
2020 was a highly contrasted vintage that got off to a difficult start. The year began with an exceptionally rainy winter, followed by a mild spring. In this context, protecting the vines against mildew and managing the soil was a real struggle. The first miracle appeared in mid-May, with dry and warm conditions during one of the earliest flowerings we have seen, two weeks ahead of schedule. The second miracle was on 19 June, when the rain stopped, and the weather turned dry and cool until the beginning of the grape color change in mid-July. At this point, summer settled in for good, with some spells of heat through mid-August when thunderstorms provided some relief and allowed the Merlot grapes to swell. The later-ripening Cabernets remained the size of blueberries until harvest, and the Merlots ripened slowly until mid-September. The result was a vintage harvested about ten days early, mostly in sunny conditions. Both the Merlot and Cabernet were tannic, colorful, and perfectly balanced.

Tasting Notes: Lastly, the 2020 Chateau Peby Faugeres tastes like the blood of Merlot with its inky, full-bodied, yet incredibly pure profile. Pure cassis, ripe black cherries, graphite, spring flowers, and truffly, floral notes all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with a seamless, silky, powerful, yet still incredibly elegant profile. It shows the more inward, serious style of the vintage, has building tannins, and a salty, iron-like character, and it has the class to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and evolve gracefully over the following two decades or more.

Tasting Notes: Almost completely opaque in color, the wine is fully-packed with countless layers of perfectly ripe, opulently textured, deep, dark fruits. Powerful, yet balanced, with a palate-staining, seamless finish loaded with perfectly ripe, dark red, velvet-textured, pit fruits with a gorgeous sense of purity that builds, expands and lingers for over 50 seconds. This is already stunning, but its best days are yet to come. Drink from 2025-2050.

Tasting Notes: Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Peby Faugeres is a little subdued to begin, soon unfurling to offer evocative notes of crushed black cherries, plum preserves, licorice, tar, and black truffles with a hint of wild fungi. The full-bodied palate bursts with bright, impactful black and blue fruits, supported by a refreshing backbone and firm-yet-ripe, rounded tannins, finishing very long with a touch of oak coming through. Tasting Notes: The 2020 Peby Faugeres sports a deep purple-black color and pronounced notes of blueberry preserves, plum pudding and Christmas cake, followed by hints of licorice, Indian spices and sandalwood with a waft of wild mushrooms. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with concentrated black fruit preserves, framed by super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing very long and spicy. This wine has all the volume nobs [sic] turned to maximum - and it works! Definitely one for the hedonists, though.

Tasting Notes: The 2020 Peby-Faugeres is ripe and plush on the nose of macerated black cherries, creme de cassis and violet scents; there’s a lot of new oak present, although it seems in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit, sweet morello cherries and a dash of black pepper. Plush and quite decadent on the finish, in keeping with its style. I will be the contrarian as ever and not for the first time, pin my colors to the mast of the 2020 Faugeres as my pick over Peby-Faugeres, though hedonists will think otherwise.
