2017 Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon
Sourcing
The Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon is the pinnacle of our blending efforts each year. The exalted Sacrashe Vineyard takes center stage and is the basis of this blend. The vineyard contributes the mouth-coating richness and complexity, offering deep, dark, earthy cassis flavors and powerfully dense tannins. From there, we seek complementary vineyards, usually from the most regarded mountain appellations, to create balance, symmetry, and finesse in the wine. Lastly, we introduce vineyards with profound depth and decadence to heighten the voluptuousness and opulence that have become the hallmark character of our flagship wine.

Tasting Notes
The 2017 Kathryn Hall is deep, dark, ruby, and elegantly balanced with layered aromas of concentrated blackberry, freshly turned earth, and a hint of warm, spicy oak. The palate is fruit-forward with underlying notes of rich cocoa and leather. Layers of black fruit, nutmeg, cassis, and brooding earthy notes are abundant. Supple, seamless tannin abounds, and the wine finishes with several minutes of incredible dark fruit feedback.

Tasting Notes: A barrel sample of [...] Cabernet Sauvignon, [...] Merlot, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is opaque purple-black colored and bursts flamboyantly from the glass, revealing notes of spice cake, potpourri, Ceylon tea and incense notes over a core of black currant cordial, black forest cake and baked blackberries with a waft of dusty soil. The palate is full, rich, spicy and seductive with a velvety texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

Tasting Notes: Delightfully ripe, with succulent blackberry, plum and cassis flavors rolled together, carried by a well-buried graphite edge and ending with a flurry of additional fruit, while licorice and violet notes chime in. Shows the slight toothy edge of the vintage, but has enough fruit to succeed. Best from 2021 through 2030.

Tasting Notes: The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is plush, dark and jammy, with tons of palate presence and resonance. Medium in body and pliant, the 2017 is shaping up nicely. Red fruit, cedar, iron, licorice, dried herb and earthy notes all develop in the glass. Most of this fruit is from Hall's Sacrashe vineyard in Rutherford.
