2022 Yamhill-Carlton Assemblage Pinot Noir
The Series
Our Single Vineyard Designate series pays homage to the vaunted terroirs of the Willamette Valley. While constrained by these terroirs, as winemakers, we still have to summon the blending skills to combine, oftentimes, dozens of different lots of wines from the same vineyard while being mindful of the intriguing sense of place that terroir brings. These wines speak resolutely of where they are grown and are distinctly complex and powerful. The Yamhill-Carlton Assemblage is a blend of Pinot Noir from Yamhill and Hirschy Vineyards. Owned and managed by Ralph and Sue Stein, Yamhill Vineyards has partnered with the Langes since 1987. Both sites are planted entirely on sedimentary soils.
The Vintage
"Our spring and early summer continued to be quite cool with rain events persisting into early June. As we moved into summer, the season came on strong, hot and dry, with temperatures running almost 6 degrees above normal from August through October. This was the point at which our abundant winter rains came into play, allowing the canopy to stay green well into the fall. Warm, dry conditions in October gave us the latitude to ripen all the fruit that had gotten off to a late start. Our last pick on October 21st ended just before the autumn rains commenced. The yields across all vineyards, projected at 30% of normal, ended up in the normal range. Early indications point to lovely, classic white wines with ripe fruit character and well-defined acid backbones, while our Pinot Noirs show high-toned aromatics and rich, concentrated flavors." - Executive Winemaker, Don Lange

Tasting Notes: I loved the multiple earth aromas course, as the earthy scent of a cup of blackberry tea mingled with earthy oregano, wet brick, and blackcap raspberry aromas. The wine's lively, crisp texture is matched by its frisky acidity. Look for raspberry pie and sage flavors supported by velvety tannins. The Assemblage bounces like a Coltrane sax solo.

Tasting Notes: A more broad-shouldered Pinot Noir [...] with at least 25-year-old vines in both sites. Ripe cherries, opulent aromatics with red plums and sweet roasted cinnamon spice. The palate is luxurious and ripe, with lots of generosity from the gates. Ripe fruits and notes of lush, sweet strawberries and warm exotic spices, finishing with the structure of rooibos and black tea. Juicy and immediately giving.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton Assemblage is a bit coy in the glass but has a lot to say as a rich blend of steeped plums, cocoa and brown spices slowly emerges. Soothingly round yet lifted in feel, this flows across the palate with mineral-inflected red berry fruits that slowly saturate toward the close. It finishes perfumed and gently tannic, leaving a licorice tinge behind.

Tasting Notes: From a site located right above the town of Yamhill [...]. It pours a ripe ruby/magenta color and has a floral profile with notes of violets, ripe black raspberries, and fresh forest herbs. It offers a lot of pleasure out of the gate, which is typical for this site. Medium-bodied, it’s broader and more expansive on the palate, with ripe tannins a [sic], a plush texture, and a light earth-toned, savory finish. It will drink well over the next 8-10 years.
