Brunello di Montalcino 'Riserva' 2015 DOCG
Wine Details
Vintage: 2015
Wine Typology: DOCG
Grape: Sangiovese
Vineyard Altitude: 450 m
Terroir: South-facing vineyard at 450 meters. Sandy loam and volcanic soil mix with marl veins.
Weather
The winter saw cold night-time temperatures but rarely below freezing. This was followed by an early spring with many days of bright sunshine interspersed with at least seven days of rain per month, very good for the soils and replenishing water for the vines. Summer started early with a warm June, hot July, and August following through to the end of September. Luckily at San Polino, we caught the few storms that there were, with no hail damage. The rain bought relief to the vines, giving them strength for their last lap before harvest.

Made with organically farmed grapes and fermented with wild yeasts, this delicious wine has balsamic aromas of camphor that mingle with new leather, blue flower and spiced plum. Generous and enveloping, the full-bodied palate is full of flavor and already approachable, doling out dried black cherry, blackberry jam and licorice before a baking-spice close. Drink 2022–2028.

Country: Italy

Vintage: 2015
Score: 97
The beauty and balance of this Brunello is wonderful, offering blueberry, black-cherry and violet character. It’s full-bodied, yet so layered and refined with an ultra fine palate of silky tannins. A joy to taste. From organically grown grapes. One both to drink and for the cellar.

The San Polino 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (made with organic fruit) is another pretty protagonist from the vintage that does not hold back in terms of intensity, primary fruit character and dark plummy ripeness. Keeping in line with the characteristics of this warm and sunny vintage, this is a generous, soft and fruit-forward expression. Those 2015 tannins are a bit softer compared to 2016, and this wine is almost, but not quite, ready to drink straight out of the gate. For best results, however, give it another three years.

Red wine from Italy
Drinking window: 2024 - 2032
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a vibrant spice bomb, overbrimming with notes of cinnamon, clove and cedar before settling down a bit and giving way to cherries and white smoke. It’s round and pliant with pronounced inner sweetness, balanced by zesty acids helping add a juicy note to the expression. The wine’s structure can be felt more in the finish, tugging at the palate with youthful poise, while rosy florals and hints of licorice linger. I’m loving the fruit here, but not the confectionary tones that come with it. The 2015 spent six months in barrique followed by four years in large Slavonian oak barrels.
